Correspondence with Alma Mahler, Franz Werfel, and Adolf Klarmann, 1923-1973.

Topics of the correspondence are mainly publishing matters pertaining to Werfel's works in the period 1923 to 1938, including the following: negotiations of contracts; translations of Werfel's work; the banning of Werfel's novel Die vierzig Tage des Musa Dagh; the film rights to Werfel's play Juarez und Maximilian; Werfel's occasional review of manuscripts submitted for publication; and the formal ending of Werfel's contractual relationship with the company, in a document dated 1939. A number of contracts are included (some in the form of typescripts provided by Paul Zsolnay Verlag). Aside from later correspondence between Paul Zsolnay Verlag and Adolf Klarmann, dated 1948 to 1973 (6 items), the only item that dates past 1939 is 1 letter addressed to Alma Mahler in 1952 clarifying, retrospectively, certain matters pertaining to contractual relationships and royalty payments in the pre-1938 period. The correspondence with Klarmann includes a typescript of a film prospectus based on Werfel's novel Verdi which was found in the archive of Paul Zsolnay Verlag; for correspondence concerning a projected film based on that novel, see under: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer; and Marton, George. For other correspondence of Paul Zsolnay with Franz Werfel and Alma Mahler, in the period 1937 to 1961, see under: Zsolnay, Paul von, 1895-.
